Azerbaijan—a nation of Turkic Muslims—has been an independent republic since the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. Despite a cease-fire, in place since 1994, Azerbaijan has yet to resolve its conflict with Armenia over the Azerbaijani Nagorno-Karabakh enclave (largely populated by Armenians). Azerbaijan has lost almost 20 percent of its territory and must support some 750,000 refugees and internally displaced persons as a result of the conflict. Shangai is an outlying part of Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, and it is here that Teymur Hajiyev sets his short film with an improvised rhythm, with shots that seem casual and stolen by the main character, but supported by an intelligent screenplay. The whole film is told in the first person by a nosy boy who films with his camera in the middle of his relations, always welcomed by a proverbial affection; “Filmmaker son of a bitch, didn’t I tell you to throw that contraption away?” his father tells him, for example. The pieces shot by chance, however, form a story and the elliptical leaps of the story from one bit of junk footage to another force the viewer to reconstruct the story of a love intrigue and blackmail. The apparent jumble, in retrospect becomes the pace of a haphazard way of ...

Today, four off-shore oilfields produce the lion's share of Azerbaijan's output: "Guneshli," which yields 57 percent of Azerbaijan's current oil production, "Chirag," "Azeri," and "Kapaz." During the Soviet period, these fields were left largely untapped because of the expense and difficulty of drilling at great depths under the sea. Since independence, the Azerbaijan International Operating Company, a twelve-company consortium dominated by BP-Amoco, is developing the three largest Azeri oilfields. Apart from the development of the oilfields, which has already begun, Azerbaijan continues its explorations for other deposits in the Caspian Sea. In the part of the Caspian belonging to Azerbaijan, around 24 sites have been singled out as suitable for drilling. Russian/Eng/Nat As the world's major oil supplies dry up or are threatened by war, the huge oil reserves of the Caspian Sea have caught the eye of international businesses and governments. Estimated to have the equivalent of three North Sea's worth of oil, scores of major companies have set up in the Azeri city of Baku to take advantage of the boom. Although an international oil consortium has been set up to avoid conflict some experts believe the region could become as volatile as the Middle East in the next century. For this new floating oil platform the calm waters of the Caspian are ideal for exploration and drilling. It's part of the region's third oil boom which started with the fall of the Soviet Union. International oil companies have flooded in since 1991 to tap he area's rich reserves on land and under the sea. Both Russia and America have formed foreign policy around the region, well aware that the development of oil resources can create tensions which often lead to hostilities. Regional rivals Turkey, Russia and Iran are vying for control of the oil exports in an effort to gain the upper-hand in the region and to secure influence over the former Soviet republics of Central Asia. But the Azerbaijani president Geidar Aliyev says that a combination of he new wealth brought to his country by the oil boom and his firm rule will ensure stability rather than conflict. SOUNDBITE: (Russian) \"I don't think Azerbaijan is threatened by the danger of a North-South conflict or between different countries. I don't think it's a reality but I can't guarantee against that possibility.\" SUPER CAPTION: Geidar Aliyev, Azeri President The oil reserves in this part of the world are so great that no single company could efficiently exploit them. So U-S, Russian, Japanese, British, Saudi, Turkish and Azerbaijani interests have created an international consortium. Businessmen hope international cooperation will help keep the region politically quiet and eventually turn it into a major supplier of high-grade oil for world markets. SOUNDBITE: (English) \"I think that you can see from the international interest in the Caspian at this point in time how important this is going to be as a long term resource centre to supply global oil. It's also coming onto the market , onto the global market at a time when other major basins such as the North Sea, such as Alaska etc are going into significant decline.\" SUPERCAPTION: Terry Adams, head of international oil consortium Turkey and Russia are engaged in a bitter battle to export the Caspian oil to Europe via pipelines through their own territories. So far the international consortium has not decided on the long term solution, but early oil exports will go through Russia and Georgia. Political analysts are not that optimistic of stability in the region as the people of the Caspian have along history of confrontation and full-scale wars, often triggered by rivalry over who would control the oil wells. SOUNDBITE: (English) \"It is a danger that the region could become as explosive as the Middle East. You have all the same ingredients which are available in the Middle East. You also have a long history of rivalry between Turkey and Iran, Russia and the West.\" SUPER CAPTION: Viktor Trenin, Carnegie Institute Moscow It remains to be seen whether economic expediency and common sense will prevail in regional politics over centuries of animosity and mistrust. For the time being, Azerbaijan is looking to the future full of hope. Azerbaijan is probably where the Vikings came from, and definitely has the most mud volcanoes in the world. Sundry Nobels and Rothschilds made their fortunes on Baku oil and helped to found the world's first oil and gas industry here. Azerbaijan was, in 1918, the world's first Islamic democracy. Today, it’s a new nation finding its feet as it emerges from a war-torn post-Soviet chrysalis on a petroleum-funded gust of optimism. Surrounded by semi-desert on the oil-rich Caspian Sea, the nation’s cosmopolitan capital, Baku, is a dynamic boomtown, where flashy limousines and mushrooming skyscrapers sweep around a picturesque Unesco-listed ancient core. The most rugged terrain is in the Southeast of Azerbaijan, which of the three Caucasian states has the greatest land area. Azerbaijan is dominated by the shoreline of the Caspian Sea, the Caucasus mountain range, and flatlands in the middle of the country. Landscape is characterized by dramatic elevation changes over short distances, from lowlands to highlands, with nearly half of the country considered mountainous. The word Azerbaijan is a distortion of the Greek word Atropates, given by the successors of Alexander the Great to the region of ancient Iran and inhabited by mysterious people known as the Albans. The word Atropates means “protected by fire,” a reference to the fires in the Zoroastrian temples and to the to natural burning of surface oil deposits. Although the Albans disappeared from history, each and every ethnic group now present in the region claims ties to their ancient heritage. Citrus fruits, tea, and rice are grown in the lowlands, while the slopes are covered with vineyards and orchards. Besides being a major producer of grapes, Azerbaijani agriculture is known for olives, saffron, pomegranates, nuts, vegetables, figs, and the sesame plant for seeds and oil. The fishing industry is important to the economy, with the catch consisting mostly of herring, carp, and sturgeon roe that is processed into caviar. Agriculture is the second largest industry after petroleum exploration, processing, and transportation, which is the backbone of the Azerbaijani economy.

Great quantities of it were found on the banks of the river Issus, one of the tributaries of the Euphrates. Ancient Persian tablets indicate the medicinal and lighting uses of petroleum in the upper levels of their society. Oil was exploited in the Roman province of Dacia, now in Romania, where it was called picula. The earliest known oil wells were drilled in China in 347 AD or earlier. They had depths of up to about 800 feet (240 m) and were drilled using bits attached to bamboo poles. The oil was burned to evaporate brine and produce salt... The first streets of Baghdad were paved with tar, derived from petroleum that became accessible from natural fields in the region. In the 9th century, oil fields were exploited in the area around modern Baku, Azerbaijan... The modern history of petroleum began in the 19th century with the refining of kerosene from crude oil. Although the Russian Dubinin brothers had purified kerosene directly from petroleum in their factory in 1823, and the process of refining kerosene from coal was discovered by Nova Scotian Abraham Pineo Gesner in 1846, it was only after Ignacy Łukasiewicz had improved Gesner's method to develop a means of refining kerosene from the more readily available "rock oil" ("petr-oleum") seeps, in 1852, that the first rock oil mine was built in Bóbrka, near Krosno in central European Galicia (Poland/Ukraine) in 1853. In 1854, Benjamin Silliman, a science professor at Yale University in New Haven, was the first person to fractionate petroleum by distillation. These discoveries rapidly spread around the world, and Meerzoeff built the first modern Russian refinery in the mature oil fields at Baku in 1861. At that time Baku produced about 90% of the world's oil... The first oil well in North America was in Oil Springs, Ontario, Canada in 1858, dug by James Miller Williams. The US petroleum industry began with Edwin Drake's drilling of a 69-foot (21 m) oil well in 1859, on Oil Creek near Titusville, Pennsylvania, for the Seneca Oil Company... Until the mid-1950s coal was still the world's foremost fuel, but after this time oil quickly took over... Today, about 90% of vehicular fuel needs are met by oil. Petroleum also makes up 40% of total energy consumption in the United States, but is responsible for only 2% of electricity generation... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spindletop Spindletop is a salt dome oil field located in the southern portion of Beaumont, Texas in the United States. The Spindletop dome was derived from the Louann Salt evaporite layer of the Jurassic geologic period. On January 10, 1901, a well at Spindletop struck oil ("came in"). The new oil field soon produced more than 100,000 barrels (16,000 m3) of oil per day. Gulf Oil and Texaco, now part of Chevron Corporation, were formed to develop production at Spindletop. The strike at Spindletop represented a turning point for Texas and the nation. No previously discovered oil field in the world had ever been so productive. The frenzy of oil exploration and the economic development it generated in the state became known as the Texas Oil Boom. The United States soon became the leading oil producer in the world...

Today, we would like to talk about a miraculous country of Azerbaijan with its unlimited natural resources, centuries-old culture, history and ancient people, whose lifestyle presents a unique and harmonious combination of the traditions and ceremonies of different cultures and civilizations. The science and the enlightenment in Azerbaijan have a centuries-old history. The Baku State University was founded in 1919; the institutes of the Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan play an exceptional role in scientific, educational and cultural development of Azerbaijan. Local scientists are currently studying such important issues as the depths of the Caspian Sea, space exploration and the secrets of human brain. The existing educational system of Azerbaijan is made up of dozens of higher educational institutions and technical schools, thousands of high schools, colleges and lyceums. One of the most important problems which is currently solved by local scientists is environmental protection of the Caspian Sea and different regions of Azerbaijan. Such natural reserves as Gizilagach, Shirvan, Zagatala, Aggol, Girkan and others, were established due to the efforts of Azerbaijani scientists. Through the decades, the local industry was successfully represented by oil producing, petrochemical and oil processing enterprises. The agricultural industry is famous for cotton-growing, viticulture, vegetable-growing and cattle-breeding. If one compares the economy of Azerbaijan with a living body, it becomes evident that oil flows in the veins of Azerbaijan. The oil and gas resources of Azerbaijan have made this place famous in every part of the world from the ancient times. Azerbaijan has always been famous for its sources of eternal fires - the atashgehs. There is a place called Yanardag (blazing mountain) in Absheron and thermal springs in some parts of Nakhichivan, Kelbejar, Masali, Lenkoran, Babadag and etc. In Surakhani, there is an eternal fire place. From the ancient times the fire worshippers from remote places and even the Indian priests were coming to Absheron in search of fire and finding it here. They built their main temples here in Surakhani, Ateshgah. The word Azerbaijan brings its main wealth - oil - before the eyes. Oil is not only the wealth, but the fame as well. People were coming to Azerbaijan from distant places for this specific taste and colored puddle under the ground. Throughout the centuries, camelcades carried waterskins of oil in both eastern and western directions. The Azerbaijani oil is not used exclusively for the electricity production, but also as a valuable medicine for a variety of diseases. There has been an increasing demand for oil throughout the centuries. From the beginning of the 20th century, the continuous industrial development around the world, caused an unprecedented growth of the demand for oil. It was at this time oil turned from an everyday mean into an industrial product. Oil become the most important problem in the world in the 20th century - the century of science and technologies. Oil-producing countries have acquired special oil policies and oil strategies in this connection. Azerbaijan is currently involved into the implementation of huge energy projects. Oil and gas projects are successfully implemented in the Caspian sector of Azerbaijan. Azerbaijan is a country, which plays an extremely important role in the Caspian and Caucasian regions, particularly in the development of transport infrastructure in the Caucasus and the implementation of energy projects. It was the region's first country to explore the huge energy potential, to form an absolutely new economic model in the regional development, and to expand political and economic relations between Europe and Asia.

The apparent jumble, in retrospect becomes the pace of a haphazard way of life, between vodka and insults, familiar to anyone who enjoys a certain type of Russian literature.
